Hey, How About Those Presidential Candidates?

As I was watching the news today, I just had to laugh. The talking heads really think that the words Liberal, conservative, left, right and middle have a specific meaning when used in their reporting. They are, of course, referring to the press releases distributed by the candidates. They must be checking some revisionist dictionary because I can’t seem to find any real language to help me follow along.

Let’s see. Hillary is a centrist meaning she is in the middle of the philosophical left. John McCain is a conservative? Only in comparison to Dennis Kucinich. Obama is a rock star. I haven’t even heard him sing a note, have you?

Folks, all this posturing for caucuses and primaries is to try to figure out what you want to hear. That would be a good thing if they used the information to do what we want them to do after they get elected. Unfortunately, it is only used to make hollow promises for campaign advertising. Fortunately, they only have to start their campaign with the promises. As it starts to get serious they will get back to telling us why the opponents shouldn’t be elected rather than why they should.

The left, right, liberal and conservative words are irrelevant. All the folks in congress are far to the left of Republicans of the 80’s. John McCain and Rudy Juliani would have made very electable as Democrats back then. Like her husband, Hillary could only be a centrist within the Democratic Party.

I am a traditionalist, so I don’t seem to have a political party right now. I used to align myself with Republicans but the current crop seems to suffer from the same desire to engineer our society as the Democrats. Never the less, I would love to see a ticket of Newt Ginrich and Mit Romney in any combination. Of course, if they begin to get press like the Democrats my view may change.
